Gear I always carry:

  1. Kayak – I just bought myself an Equinox 124, cheapest darn thing I ever heard of and I love it.  I bought my first kayak when I didn’t have a car so I got an inflatable.  Having a hard-shell has been wonderful.
  2. PDF – I use a <<brand/name>> Life Vest.  Of course I never go out without it, see my Safety page for more on that.
  3. Paddle – my boat came with a colapsable paddle, and it does the job fine for me.  I had bought a @20 one previously so it feels like wings compared to that.
  4. Bilge pump – I’ve never had to use it, but I’ve playing with it in the sink.  That counts, right?
  5. Inflatable paddle float – I’ve also never had to use this, But I’m sure the day will come when I’ll be glad I’ve been carrying it around with me.
  6. Hat
  7. Sunglasses
  8. Sunscreen
  9. Small Jacket – This is specifically my kayaking jacket.  It’s fairly water resistant, and blocks the wind and cold really well as long as you keep moving.  I store it in a dry bag – wouldn’t be any point if it got soaked.
  10. Floating dry bag – for the most part I’m fine with using ziplocks and trash bags to keep gear dry, but there are times when I need to have my phone out for navigation, or, you know, phone calls.  For this I have a special dry bag with a padded flotation compartment.  If I happen to drop the phone it won’t get wet, but it also won’t sink, which is a horse of a different problem entirely.
